Originally commissioned by Puma for shirt numbering at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, this brush-influenced display face uses a dual-axis slant to suggest script energy without compromising garment production.
About
Paul Barnes designed Gabriello for Puma, who used the Bold weight on kits for their African teams at both the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. Rather than adopting the conventional straight-sided octic letterforms typical of sportswear, the design borrows from brush lettering and tilts characters on both horizontal and vertical axes. The result is markedly more organic than standard athletic numerals, available through Commercial Type's Vault of previously unreleased or custom-origin work.
Classification
Designed for sports shirt numbering, Gabriello draws from brush lettering traditions and is slanted on two axes, giving it a script-like energy while remaining suitable for garment production. Its organic, rounded forms place it firmly in the display category.
