A matched serif and sans-serif headline pair, commissioned for MittMedia's Swedish newspaper group, engineered so the two styles share identical spacing and can be swapped to alter a page's tone without affecting copyfit.
About
Berton Hasebe designed Duplex to solve a precise production problem: a single newspaper group publishing both upmarket and downmarket titles needed a way to shift editorial character while keeping layouts interchangeable. The Sans is adapted from Guardian Sans Headline; the Serif draws on early twentieth-century Caslon-derived news headline types. Identical spacing between the two families means editors can toggle between a louder, more urgent tabloid register and a quieter, more authoritative one without resetting a single line.
Classification
Duplex comprises a matched serif and sans-serif pair designed specifically for newspaper headlines, where identical spacing allows the two styles to be interchanged without affecting copyfit. The sans draws from Guardian Sans Headline and the serif from early twentieth-century Caslon-derived news faces.
