A blackletter companion to Canela, drawn by Miguel Reyes from the tradition of Mexican fonda signage, with two capital sets ranging from simplified to newspaper-nameplate ornate.
About
Miguel Reyes developed the typeface from sketches originally made for his own family's restaurant, Raíz, rooting the design in the casual hand-painted lettering seen on small Mexican eateries called fondas. The character set has since been expanded to include two distinct sets of capitals: a plain, functional variant and a more elaborate one recalling the mastheads of historic newspapers. It is issued through Commercial Type's Vault, a collection of previously unreleased or out-of-print work, so the character set should be checked before licensing.
Classification
A blackletter typeface in the tradition of Mexican vernacular signage, combining gothic letterforms with two sets of capitals – one simplified, one ornate in the manner of newspaper nameplates.
