A low-contrast italic with faceted edges and no curves, originally drawn by Paul Barnes for Puma to appear legible and stylish on the backs of football shirts.
About
Designed alongside Gabriello for Puma, Azzurri dispenses with curves entirely, using faceted edges to give each letterform a distinctive angular quality suited to the demands of sportswear application. Swash alternates were added after the initial design. It now resides in Commercial Type's Vault, a collection of previously unreleased or custom typefaces with potentially limited character sets.
Classification
A purpose-built italic display face with no curves and faceted edges, designed specifically for application on football shirts. Its structural oddity – an italic with no upright companion – and its highly constrained geometry place it firmly in the display category.
