Erik van Blokland's variable-first grotesque built empirically around screen legibility at the smallest discernible sizes, with particular attention to punctuation, numerals and diacritics.
About
Rather than following a historical model, Van Blokland let optical proofing at small sizes drive the design, resulting in a large x-height, low contrast and a generous weight range suited to complex, structured information. The family is offered as variable fonts covering both upright and italic axes, making it highly practical for screen-based editorial and interface work. Extra weight was given to punctuation and diacritics to keep them unambiguous under demanding rendering conditions.
Classification
A low-contrast grotesque sans serif with a large x-height and broad weight range, developed empirically for screen reading rather than derived from historical models.
