A seven-weight sans-serif drawn from the sign-painting vernacular of Sunset Boulevard, with modulated vertical strokes and brush-lift terminals that sit between display type and functional text.
About
Designed by Benjamin Critton following his arrival in Los Angeles in 2016, Sunset Gothic amalgamates the anonymous brush-lettering traditions found on building facades and shop fronts along Sunset Boulevard. Its modulated, flared vertical strokes echo precedents like Optima and Novarese's Forma, while curvature terminals mimic the natural lift of a painter's brush. A stylistic set provides angled sign-painters' terminals to horizontal strokes, extending the typeface's vernacular character.
Classification
A modulated sans-serif with flared vertical strokes and curvature terminals derived from Los Angeles sign-painting tradition, placing it between a humanist grotesque and a display type in the manner of Optima or Forma.
