Lydia

Colophon · Benjamin Critton

displaycalligraphic sanscondenseditalic
Lydia specimen from Colophon

A two-style calligraphic display sans derived from Warren Chappell's Lydian (ATF, 1938), redrawn by Benjamin Critton in a single bold condensed weight with italic.

About

Lydia was initially drawn for a poster announcing a visit by typographer Matthew Carter and developed over several years from 2010 onwards. It sits in the tradition of calligraphic sans-serifs that balance pen-drawn fluidity with mechanical sharpness, citing Chappell's Canon, Edwin Shaar's Valiant and Tom Carnase's Honda as companions. The family is minimal in scope, comprising only Bold Condensed and Bold Condensed Italic.

Classification

A bold condensed calligraphic sans-serif derived from Warren Chappell's Lydian (ATF, 1938), retaining the pen-drawn qualities of the original while introducing a sharpened, machine-like precision. Its display weight and narrow proportions place it firmly in the display category.
