Basis Grotesque began as a commissioned typeface for the redesign of Hotshoe magazine before being extended into seven weights with matching italics. Its points of departure include Akzidenz-Grotesk and Monotype's early grotesque catalogue, though the final design moves towards something more controlled and shapely. A consistent skeletal structure across the weight range gives the family coherence while allowing genuine variation from Thin to Black.
