A workhorse serif developed from Colophon's observation of photocopied and offset-printed typography, distinguished by small notched indents at the top and bottom of each serif that give the letterforms a rhythmic, pre-existing quality.
About
Originally commissioned for a Photoworks publication documenting the Troubles in Northern Ireland, Archive took its formal cue from the distortions introduced by lo-fi reproduction – photocopying and primitive offset printing. The notched serifs lend each letterform an independent character that accumulates into a distinctive rhythm across a full setting. The Pro variant extends the family with small capitals, discretionary ligatures, typographic alternates and full Cyrillic and Greek support, while a monospaced Roman variant broadens its utility further.
Classification
A serif typeface with distinctive notched serifs – small indents at the top and bottom of each serif parallel to the baseline – derived from observing the distortions of photocopying and primitive offset printing. This gives the letterforms a lo-fi, pre-existing quality that sits between a conventional book serif and a display face.
