ZDF specimen from Carrois Type Design

A bespoke 116-font corporate type system for Germany's ZDF broadcaster, built across three widths and three styles with uniwidth construction and variable font support added in 2023.

About

Designed from 2017 onwards for ZDF, Germany's second-largest public broadcaster, the system spans 126 static fonts and 3 variable fonts across condensed, regular and wide widths, each in roman and italic. The uniwidth principle — matching character widths across all weight variants — ensures text reflow never occurs when switching between weights for accessibility or dark/light mode changes. The project is maintained and expanded as ZDF's multi-channel streaming and broadcast needs evolve.

Classification

A custom corporate type system designed for broadcast and streaming contexts, with uniwidth construction across all cuts — a functional humanist sans built for multi-channel media legibility at varied weights and sizes.
