A single-weight display face by Matt Willey in which every character shares the same height, removing ascenders and descenders to hold a uniformly dense typographic line.
About
Originally drawn in 2015 for the 'Voyages' special issue of The New York Times Magazine, NSW 01 was substantially reworked for its 2.0 release in 2021 with assistance from Diana Ovezea. The defining constraint is structural: all characters, upper and lower case alike, sit at cap height with no ascenders or descenders breaking the line, the sole exception being the Q. This produces an unusually compact, rhythmic texture suited to editorial headlines and geographic labelling.
Classification
A unicase-adjacent display typeface where all characters share the same cap height, deliberately eliminating ascenders and descenders to create an unbroken horizontal register. Its compact, monolinear construction and editorial origins place it firmly in the display category.
