ARS Roman Descendiaan

ARS Type · Angus R. Shamal · 1997

seriftransitionalitalic
ARS Roman Descendiaan specimen from ARS Type

A crisp Dutch book serif after Fleischman, drawn in 1997 and refined since 2011, in six weights with swash italics.

About

Descendiaan takes its name from an eighteenth-century Dutch term for small text sizes and its inspiration from Fleischman's punchcutting, without being a revival. Sharp, economical serifs and considered ink traps keep it legible at 10 to 11 point, while the italics keep a slight slope and a narrow width in the spirit of Joanna and Trinité. It was tested in real book production at Prometheus/Bert Bakker before the redesign that began in 2011.

Classification

A contemporary book serif inspired by Fleischman's 1730s Descendiaan and Augustyn cuts: distinct contrast and stroke modulation, sharp crisp serifs with ink-trap angles, and a narrow, barely sloped italic in the manner of Joanna and Trinité.
