ANRT’s revival of Claude Jacob’s Strasbourg Baskerville, a transitional roman paired with a Didot-leaning italic.
About
Baskervville follows Jacob’s eighteenth-century copy of Baskerville rather than Baskerville himself, so the roman is calm and familiar while the italic turns sharper and more modern. That split between transitional and modern is the point of it, and it gives book and editorial settings a slightly French accent. This is the Regular and Italic as ANRT’s students drew them; the version on Google Fonts has since added heavier weights.
Classification
A revival of the Baskerville-style types cast by Claude Jacob in Strasbourg in the late eighteenth century. The roman keeps close to Baskerville’s transitional model, while the italic leans towards Didot, with sharper contrast and a more vertical stress.
