McBean began as a commission from California Institute of the Arts to extend the school's identity into a multi-style typeface. Built across sans, slab and italic cuts in five weights each, plus a standalone display weight called Beast, it leans into an eclectic voice in keeping with CalArts' quirky design history. An OpenType 'switchcase' feature swaps in an alternate capital A and E, nodding to a logo originally drawn by Scott Taylor.
