A research-driven micro-typography typeface by Thomas Huot-Marchand, issued in five optically distinct versions optimised for point sizes ranging from 6pt down to 2pt, grounded in Emile Javal's 19th-century theories of compact printing.
About
Each of the five versions progressively exaggerates letterform distinctions as the intended size decreases: x-height rises, stroke contrast diminishes, inktraps appear and secondary detail is stripped away, reaching its most bizarre and reductive form at 2pt. The italics introduce rhythmic, broken movement rather than simply slanting the roman. Developed at the Atelier national de recherche typographique and completed during a residency at the Villa Médicis in Rome, the project earned awards from the Type Collectors Club and was named Erik Spiekermann's favourite font of 2007 in Typographica.
Classification
A serifed typeface engineered specifically for extreme small-point setting, with five optical sizes ranging from 6pt to 2pt. Stroke contrast, spacing and letterform complexity are progressively modified as the intended point size decreases, placing it firmly in the optical serif tradition.
