A four-style family by Sarah Kremer in which each variant draws from a distinct historical model – humanist incunabula, chancery italic, early grotesque and heavy display – unified by shared proportions rather than formal consistency.
About
Rather than seeking stylistic uniformity across its styles, Bartok deliberately assembles four formally distinct typefaces – Regular, Italic, Highlight and Poster – each referencing a different moment in typographic history. Harmonised x-heights and cap heights allow the styles to be combined naturally despite their contrasting weights and structures. Designed with editorial use in mind, the family works across both continuous text and display settings.
Classification
Bartok Regular draws from humanist incunabula proportions with calligraphic asymmetrical serifs and slanted stems, placing it firmly in the humanist serif tradition. The family's four styles span humanist, chancery italic, early grotesque and heavy display registers, making humanist serif the most accurate single category.
