Letters
Velvetyne · Céline Hurka, Jules Janssen · 2025

A display face that renders the torn, burnt texture of paper in vector curves, the product of three years of material research.
About
Letters comes out of Céline Hurka and Jules Janssen's long-running interest in how paper is depicted in print, from teared ribbons to ornamental backgrounds. Three years of burning paper, digging through the Huis van het Boek archive and tracing photographs fed into an intentionally illogical design process. Torn and Lavish styles push that material grain into large-format vector display type.
Classification
Grew out of three years of research into how paper is depicted in print, tearing and burning paper by hand before tracing the results into Bézier curves. Torn and Lavish styles carry the material grain of paper into vector letterforms.
