A post-binary rewrite of Grégoire Romanet's Stella, developed collaboratively at Rennes' Hôtel Pasteur to add gender-inclusive and Breton ligatures to an entirely lowercase handwritten typeface.

About

Stella·e originated from a single handwritten capital P drawn for the Hôtel Pasteur, a Rennes cultural space hosting artist residencies, a fablab and a bilingual French-Breton school. During a residency by Bye Bye Binary, a collective of designers and typographers extended the original letterform into a full lowercase character set, adding post-binary and Breton ligatures. The typeface is made freely available to all residents of the Hôtel and beyond.

Classification

Based on a manuscript drawing, the typeface is described as deriving from a handwritten letterform, placing it firmly in the script/handwritten category. It is set entirely in lowercase, reinforcing its informal, handcrafted character.
