A wood-type-inspired display family by Burian and Scaglione, offering eight weights concentrated at the hairline and heavy extremes, plus two variable font axes.
About
Catalpa takes its cue from the oversized, idiosyncratic character of nineteenth-century wood type, channelling that energy into a single-purpose headline family. Eight static styles span from Hairline to Ultrablack, split deliberately between very thin and very heavy weights, with variable Light and Bold axes available separately. OpenType features include stylistic sets, tabular figures, fractions, ordinals and superscript.
Classification
Explicitly designed as a display family inspired by quirky wood type, with weights concentrated at the extreme ends of the spectrum – hairline through to ultrablack – and no text sizes or condensed cuts.
