A historically speculative typeface applying Old Church Slavonic letterform principles to both Cyrillic and Latin, designed as a practical scholarly tool for researchers working with Old Russian manuscripts.
About
Named after philologist Victor Zhivov, this face inverts the Petrine reforms by borrowing construction logic from Old Church Slavonic writing rather than pushing Cyrillic towards Latin norms. Glyphs are stripped of contrast and period-specific ornament, making the design equally suited to setting texts about the Ostromir Gospels or birchbark manuscripts. Full Unicode support for Old Church Slavonic is included, alongside superscript symbols, historical ligatures, numeral systems and characters absent from the standard Cyrillic Unicode block.
Classification
A monolinear, contrast-free design rooted in Old Church Slavonic letter construction principles applied to both Cyrillic and Latin scripts. Its stripped-back, historically grounded forms resist easy classification but sit closest to a humanist serif tradition, absent of the period-specific stylistic features typical of the genre.
