Neue Plak
Tabular Type Foundry · Eiji Nishiyama, Linda Hintz · 2018

A 2018 revival of Paul Renner's 1928 Plak, expanding the original single-weight display face into a 48-style family with a complementary 12-weight Text companion, co-designed with Linda Hintz.
About
Neue Plak preserves the quirky, weight-specific letterform differences of Renner's original rather than homogenising them into a uniform system, treating that inconsistency as a deliberate virtue. The family spans three widths across multiple weights, all interpolated from 12 hand-crafted masters, while retaining distinctive details such as the wide version's iconic lowercase r. A separate Neue Plak Text subfamily offers six weights with matching italics for smaller-scale setting.
Classification
A mechanical grotesque revival of Paul Renner's 1928 Plak, sitting at the intersection of geometric and mechanical sans traditions. The design retains the original's constructed, systematic letterforms while expanding the family significantly beyond the single-weight source material.
