Neue Haas Unica
Tabular Type Foundry · Toshi Omagari · 2015

A 2015 digital revival of the 1980 Haas Unica, expanding the original neogrotesque synthesis of Helvetica and Univers with small caps, Greek and Cyrillic additions, with the Greek awarded first prize at the Granshan Type Competition.
About
Neue Haas Unica resurrects a largely forgotten typeface originally created by Team '77 — André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt — for the Haas Type Foundry. The revival was developed by Toshi Omagari after he discovered original drawings and negative masters in the Linotype archive near Frankfurt. Additions beyond the original include small caps and extended script coverage in Greek and Cyrillic, all handled with restraint to preserve the quiet coherence of the source material.
Classification
A neogrotesque revival drawing directly from Haas Unica (1980), itself a synthesis of Helvetica and Univers. Shares the closed apertures, near-uniform stroke width and rational structure characteristic of the neogrotesque genre.
