Équivoque specimen from Tabular Type Foundry

A monospaced display sans that replaces every diacritic shape with a single unified mark, turning conventional type design orthodoxy into a deliberate conceptual proposition.

About

Designed by Toshi Omagari and released through Tabular Type Foundry in 2021, Équivoque collapses all diacritic forms into one identical shape, irrespective of language or function. The dense, fixed-width texture was chosen to suit the bluntness of the effect, and the font's encoding exploits the ability to assign multiple Unicode values to a single glyph, sometimes encoding a character eleven times over. The design is openly speculative: it works best in short display settings where reader context fills the gap left by disambiguating accent forms.

Classification

A monospaced geometric sans-serif designed specifically for display use. Its fixed-width structure and dense texture place it firmly in the mono display camp, while its letterforms draw on geometric sans conventions.
