A custom signage typeface commissioned by the City of London Corporation to unify its street nameplate lettering, refined from the bespoke COL Sign tradition rooted in Monotype Albertus.
About
Developed to replace an inconsistent mix of Albertus variants scattered across the Square Mile, the typeface refines the COL Sign drawn in 1988 for the Corporation's signage system. Key amendments include a lowered A crossbar, wider G and O, a broader W, stronger lowercase strokes and added kerning data. The result is a rare example of a flared serif purpose-built for wayfinding, one that preserves the personality and civic gravity of Wolpe's original whilst correcting accumulated drift from decades of ad hoc digital substitution.
