Alcarin Tengwar
Tabular Type Foundry · Toshi Omagari · 2022

A Tengwar typeface designed to complement Brill, engineered to push OpenType well beyond its assumed limits for fictional scripts.
About
Commissioned by linguist Édouard Kloczko and released under the Open Font License in 2022, the design draws on calligraphic practice and study of Tolkien's own scripts to sit stylistically between the overly mechanical and the excessively calligraphic. Advanced OpenType features handle stacked diacritics, contextual alternates, special ligatures and multiple number notation systems that previously required SIL Graphite to achieve. It is also the first Tengwar variable font, with a weight axis spanning Regular to Bold.
Classification
Alcarin Tengwar is a typeface for Tengwar, a fictional script invented by J.R.R. Tolkien. It sits in the display category as a specialised script face with no direct Latin, serif or sans-serif classification applicable.
