Vala
Sumotype · 2018

A single-weight display face that marries English Roundhand script with extra-bold Bodoni contrast, inspired by shop window lettering seen in Bogotá.
About
Designed with spirited ball-terminals and a large x-height, Vala occupies the space between formal calligraphy and high-contrast didone type. It includes an extensive set of swash capitals, fancy ligatures and alternate lowercase forms intended to emulate the character of bespoke hand lettering for posters and logotypes. The face won a Silver at the Latin American Design Awards 2018.
Classification
Vala fuses English Roundhand script letterforms with the high contrast of an extra bold Bodoni, producing a display-weight hybrid that sits between calligraphic script and didone serif traditions.
