Marbra specimen from Slow Fonts

A display serif derived from nineteenth-century French stone-engraved lettering, built on a modular construction system where shared typographic elements combine to form individual characters.

About

Designed by Fabien Coupas between 2019 and 2021, Marbra draws from stone engravings found across France, in which openwork letters are assembled from repeated components – a stem paired with a comma becomes an 'r', the same stem with an 'n' becomes an 'm'. The sources vary in their serifs, terminals and x-heights, but all share this deconstruction logic, which Coupas has abstracted and adapted for digital use. The italic cuts at a steep angle and blends suppleness with sharp detailing, reinforcing the typeface's character without abandoning its constructive principle.

Classification

A decorative serif inspired by nineteenth-century French stone engravings, with a modular construction logic where letterforms are built from shared typographic elements – stems, commas and strokes recombined to form different characters. The strong italic angle and openwork letter construction place it firmly in the display category.
