Originally designed for R41's dry-transfer catalogue, Stop reduced certain letterforms to half their conventional structure while retaining legibility in graphic context — an experiment that influenced international type design for decades. This digital revival, developed with Dan Rhatigan of Bijou Type, is drawn directly from the original R41 film masters and extends the family with accented characters, Cyrillic, Greek and a wide set of OpenType alternates. The alternates themselves trace analogue history: variant letterforms assembled by sign-makers from the original transfers using scalpels and expertise.
Classification
Stop is a radical geometric display face with dramatically simplified letterforms — some characters are reduced to half their conventional form yet remain legible in context. Its extreme minimalism and optical experiments place it firmly in the display category.
