Cognate Grotesk

Plattner Type · James Plattner

sans-serifgrotesqueitalic
Cognate Grotesk specimen from Plattner Type

A Swiss-style grotesque with a high x-height and a bit of warmth, in Title, standard and Text cuts.

About

Cognate Grotesk works in the familiar grotesque tradition but adds smooth branching, slightly narrow proportions and small quirks that keep it from feeling cold. Title tightens up for headlines, while Text opens its spacing and apertures and adds ink traps for small sizes. Seven weights in each, all with italics.

Classification

Grotesque summing up the Swiss and International Style grotesques (Akzidenz-Grotesk, Helvetica) without reviving any one of them. Three optical subfamilies, Title, standard and Text, each in seven weights from Thin to Heavy with italics. Text has wider spacing, open apertures and ink traps for sizes down to about ten points.
