El Grande specimen from Parkinson Type Design

An extreme-weight display serif developed in 1993 by inflating Poster Black to near-bursting proportions, evoking the dramatic poster lettering of the mid-20th century.

About

El Grande originated from Poster Black, pushed to exaggerated heaviness until the letterforms occupy maximum space. Designed by Jim Parkinson in 1993, it recalls the vernacular hand-lettering traditions of American poster design. The result sits somewhere between a typeface and a lettering style, intended for large-scale display use.

Classification

A heavily inflated display serif derived from Poster Black, with extreme weight and dramatic stroke contrast characteristic of mid-20th century poster lettering styles.
