Balboa emerged from Jim Parkinson's editorial work, drawing on ATF Headline Gothic, his own Banner face for the San Francisco Chronicle, and Newsweek No. 9 – a Stevenson Blake-influenced grotesque created for Roger Black's 1980s Newsweek redesign. The result combines the weight and authority of early American sans serifs with the directness expected of headline typography. Its roots in major newspaper and magazine commissions give it a grounding in practical, high-volume display use.
