A 1978 revival of John Baskerville's 18th-century types, licensed by ITC from Linotype-Hell and extended with a Cyrillic version developed at ParaType in 1993.
About
Developed under John Quaranta's direction, the family draws directly from Baskerville's originals of circa 1757, retaining the high stroke contrast and refined serifs suited to book and magazine text. The Cyrillic extension, designed by Tagir Safayev at ParaType in 1993, broadened the family's reach, with expert Cyrillic fonts added in 1997. Four styles cover the essentials: Book, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic.
Classification
Based on John Baskerville's mid-18th-century types, ITC New Baskerville fits squarely in the transitional serif category, with the high contrast, flat serifs and wide letterforms characteristic of Baskerville's original work.
