Goudy Initials specimen from P22 Type Foundry

A digitised revival of Frederic W. Goudy's floriated Cloister Initials, redrawn by Miranda Roth Kirchmeyer and issued in four variants including a colour layer version.

About

Originally designed by Goudy in the early 1900s, these elaborately decorated capital letterforms have been redrawn from large original proofs of the Cloister Initials. The family includes a standard outline version, a fill layer, a flora layer and a full-colour variant, enabling layered composition for letterpress and packaging work. Coverage is limited to uppercase Latin letters, making the family suited to ornamental and titling use rather than extended setting.

Classification

A family of floriated decorative capital letterforms intended for use as drop caps and ornamental initials, placing it firmly in the display/decorative category. The floral embellishment and historiated character align with illuminated manuscript traditions rather than any functional text classification.
