A custom signage typeface commissioned by the City of London Corporation, refining the long-standing COL Sign tradition derived from Monotype Albertus to unify the Corporation's street nameplate system.
About
Developed from the Corporation's own COL Sign, itself a 1988 adaptation of Wolpe's Albertus, the typeface addresses decades of inconsistent digital deployment across the Square Mile. Key revisions include a lowered A crossbar, rebalanced O and Q strokes, wider lowercase letters and thicker joints at the n and similar characters. The result consolidates a distinctly Londonian flared-serif tradition into a single authoritative source for street signage.
Classification
A flared or glyphic serif, derived from Monotype Albertus via the intermediate COL Sign adaptation. The design retains the incised, lapidary quality of Albertus while introducing more uniform stroke weights and refined proportions suited to signage at scale.
