Cinzel takes the epigraphic tradition of first-century Roman stone carving as its starting point, translating the high-contrast, geometrically structured capitals into a usable digital typeface. Three weights are available – Regular, Bold and Black – alongside a variable font, with OpenType features including discretionary ligatures, old-style numerals and stylistic sets. The design avoids pure revivalism, maintaining the gravitas of ancient Latin letterforms while accommodating modern typographic contexts.
Classification
Cinzel is based on first-century Roman lapidary inscriptions, featuring classical proportions, high contrast strokes and a monoline geometric structure rooted in the Latin alphabet's epigraphic origins. Its upright, capital-focused design places it firmly in the inscriptional serif tradition.
