A digitisation of Frederic Goudy's bâtarde revival, originally drawn to typeset the medieval romance Aucassin et Nicolette and considered one of his own favourite designs.
About
Goudy drew Tory in the manner of the lettre bâtarde tradition exemplified in Geoffry Tory's sixteenth-century Champ Fleury, a hybrid of Gothic blackletter and humanist Italic forms. The design was intended for a specific literary purpose — the romantic medieval text Aucassin et Nicolette — and remained among Goudy's personally favoured works. Steve Matteson's digitisation preserves the original's calligraphic character for contemporary use, licensed through Monotype.
Classification
Designed in the spirit of the 'lettres batarde' — the French bastarda script tradition — as seen in Geoffry Tory's Champ Fleury. The bâtarde style blends Gothic blackletter with Italic humanist forms, placing this squarely in the blackletter category.
