Originally conceived as an experiment in phonetic lettering, Newstyle's design draws heavily from the Aldine romans that Goudy admired for their legibility. Steve Matteson's digitisation stays faithful to Goudy's roman, with the italic designed as a complementary addition rather than a direct revival. The family is available to license through Monotype.
Classification
Newstyle belongs to the Venetian humanist serif tradition, following Aldus Manutius's roman letterforms that Goudy considered the most readable. Its origins as a phonetic alphabet experiment give it distinctive letterform variety, while remaining anchored in Renaissance roman conventions.
