Goudy Lanston specimen from Matteson Typographics

Steve Matteson's 2025 revival of Frederic Goudy's 1912 Lanston Monotype typeface, issued in three optical sizes optimised for text, subhead and display settings.

About

Originally commissioned for Lanston Monotype and the Caslon Typefoundry, Goudy's 1912 design sought to capture the dark, rich texture of Nicolas Jenson's fifteenth-century Roman. Matteson's reimagining preserves that sturdy, weighty character while extending the family into discrete Text, Subhead and Display cuts, each tuned to perform at its intended size. The result balances historical fidelity with the practical demands of contemporary setting across a range of scales.

Classification

A revival of Frederic Goudy's 1912 design modelled on Jenson's Roman, placing it firmly in the Venetian humanist serif tradition. The dark texture, sturdy stroke and organic letterforms are characteristic of fifteenth-century Venetian printing types.
