On a mission to create the world’s biggest index of typefaces from the world’s best type foundries

displaywoodblockcondensed
LDN Poplar specimen from London Type Foundry

An all-caps woodblock display face with a chiselled metallic 3D effect, split into Foreground and Background layers for chromatic printing, inspired by pub signage found in a London public house.

About

Designed by Paul Harpin, LDN Poplar draws on the condensed letterforms of the Victorian wood type tradition, rendered with a chiselled metallic depth suited to large-scale setting. The typeface ships in two complementary parts: a Foreground font carrying the letterforms and eight directional manicules, and a Background font for printing flat colour behind them. The layered approach allows for chromatic typesetting effects faithful to historical woodblock printing practice.

Classification

An all-caps condensed display typeface in the woodblock tradition, featuring a chiselled 3D metallic appearance intended for large-size use. The split Foreground/Background system is characteristic of chromatic wood type printing conventions.
