Where Excoffon's Antique Olive Nord was conceived as an endpoint – a single heavy display weight – NewNord asks what happens when that extreme weight's underlying structure is worked back through lighter grades. The result retains the strong horizontal impetus and tense curves of the original whilst gaining legibility at text sizes through open apertures and generous counterforms. Nine weights with matching italics are extended by Wide Heavy and Extended Heavy subfamilies, completing the conceptual circle.
Classification
A Latin-script sans-serif with strong horizontal stress, tense curves and open apertures, loosely derived from Excoffon's Antique Olive Nord. Its letterforms resist easy classification – neither strictly grotesque nor geometric – but the humanist warmth in the italic styles and the open counters place it closest to humanist sans.
