Excavate specimen from Interrobang Type

A hand-drawn display face derived from a 1960 paperback, featuring intentional baseline bounce, gutsy stroke cuts and enough texture to work at medium text sizes.

About

Excavate was traced from a handful of characters in a cheap paperback and expanded into a full Latin alphabet with numerals, Spanish accents, small caps, old-style figures and discretionary ligatures. The letters eschew mathematical precision in favour of intuitive construction, with strokes that lean and bounce along the baseline to preserve a handmade quality. A full update added lowercase and an extended symbol set, making it considerably more complete than the original release.

Classification

Derived from hand-drawn letterforms interpreted from a 1960 paperback, with intentional irregularities in stroke weight and baseline rhythm that place it firmly in the display category. Its primitive, expressive character and deliberate avoidance of optical correction make it a hand-drawn display face rather than a structured serif or sans-serif.
