Santa Ana Sans

Hoodzpah · Amy Hood · 2021

sans-serifgeometric sansitalic
Santa Ana Sans specimen from Hoodzpah

A semi-condensed pseudo geometric sans in six weights with italics, inspired by vintage storefront signage and retro marquee lettering.

About

Designed by Amy Hood and released in May 2021, Santa Ana Sans takes its cues from the imperfect geometry of old shopfront signage and marquees. Six weights with matching italics give it enough range for body settings, while its distinct personality holds up in headlines, logos and display contexts. Stylistic alternates for characters such as 'a', 'g', 'Q' and 'Z' add flexibility, and a small set of dingbats is included.

Classification

Described as a semi-condensed pseudo geometric sans, drawing on the imperfect geometry of vintage storefront signage rather than strict Bauhaus construction. The condensed proportions and personality-driven details place it within the geometric sans tradition with a retro inflection.
