Harbor Type · Lu Leitenperger · 2021

A single-weight display typeface by Lu Leitenperger that blends blackletter calligraphy in the lowercase with a roman uppercase, awarded at Tipos Latinos 9 and the 14th Biennial of Brazilian Graphic Design.
About
The lowercase draws directly from blackletter calligraphy: uniform spacing where counterspace equals letterspace, straight interrupted strokes, and unusual letter constructions that give the face its dark texture. The uppercase, by contrast, is conventionally roman, making the combination legible enough for modern use in book covers, packaging and logotypes. An extensive character set includes contextual alternates, arbitrary fractions, manicules and a range of ornaments and symbols.
Classification
Categorised as display given its primary suitability for headlines and logotypes. The design draws from blackletter calligraphy in the lowercase – uniform spacing, interrupted strokes, and idiosyncratic letterforms – while the uppercase adopts a more conventional roman construction for legibility.
