Espinela

Enigma · Isaías Loaiza, Sergio Trujillo, Guido Ferreyra · 2019

seriftransitional serifitalic
Espinela specimen from Enigma

A text serif for books and magazines, with a Display cut for headlines.

About

Espinela mixes transitional structure with a cleaner modern finish, and its high x-height and large counters suit long reading. The italics have a light calligraphic touch and the bold stays firm without getting heavy. Enigma drew it in 2019 for a book on the revolutionary Carmen Serdán, setting both the cover and the inside pages.

Classification

A hybrid of transitional serif and contemporary text face. Moderate contrast, bracketed serifs, high x-height and large counters. The italics have a calligraphic touch. Four text styles plus a Display cut for large sizes, with ligatures, small caps and stylistic alternates.
