Matrix II specimen from Emigre

Zuzana Licko's 1986 typeface revisited as an expansive family, its geometric serif forms rooted in early bitmap aesthetics and expanded across widths, scripts, italics and inline variants.

About

Originally conceived for low-resolution output in the early days of desktop publishing, Matrix established Licko's approach of treating digital constraints as a design tool rather than a limitation. The Matrix II revision extends the family substantially, adding width variants from Narrow to Wide, a Tall cut, Script companions, and Inline styles with hilite layers. The result is one of the most architecturally coherent type families to emerge from the Emigre era.

Classification

Matrix II is a geometric serif with sharp, low-resolution-influenced letterforms derived from Licko's early bitmap work. Its modular construction and angular stroke endings give it a distinctive hybrid quality between classical serif structure and digital abstraction.
