Paul Barnes's revival of Alexander Wilson's Glasgow English No. 1, a wide, warm serif between Caslon and Baskerville in six weights and four optical sizes.
About
Spectator remakes Wilson's 18th-century text roman with a big x-height, wide letters and open spacing, so it reads warm and friendly in running text on paper or screen. The Text cut lowers the contrast and toughens the serifs, while Deck, Headline and Poster tighten up and sharpen until the Poster sparkles above 72pt. Six weights run up to an emphatic Black, there are variable fonts for in-between sizes, and a steeper 'Original' italic comes as a bonus cut for display.
Classification
A revival of Alexander Wilson's English No. 1 (Glasgow, around 1760), sitting between Caslon's oldstyle and Baskerville's transitional model. Large x-height, wide lowercase, long tapered serifs and loose spacing, with oldstyle details such as a long-tailed Q and an incised apex on the A, an a with a strong tail and a g with a distinctive ear and wide closed lower bowl.
