slabgeometric slab
Popular specimen from Commercial Type

A geometric slab designed in 2004 for the Popular Mechanics redesign, blending DIN's mechanical character with the bold mass of Rockwell and Stymie.

About

Originally drawn by Christian Schwartz for Robb Rice's Popular Mechanics redesign, the face sought to marry the clunky utility of DIN with the weight and presence of mid-century geometric slabs. After appearing in a handful of publications over two decades, it was completed for commercial release in 2024 with assistance from TienMin Liao. It is part of the Commercial Type Vault, a collection of previously unreleased or custom typefaces with potentially limited character sets.

Classification

A geometric slab serif combining the mechanical rigidity of DIN with the bold, blocky proportions of Rockwell and Stymie. The design sits firmly in the geometric slab tradition with an industrial character.
