A collection rooted in the stamped-metal letterforms of Pennsylvania licence plates, expanded in 2024 from Christian Schwartz's original 2000 monospaced design into a full trio of mono, sans and slab subfamilies.
About
Christian Schwartz's observation of licence plate capitals in 1990s Pittsburgh gave rise to a monospaced typeface in 2000 that captured vertical and horizontal rhythm without evoking the typewriter. Inga Plönnigs returned to Schwartz's early expansion sketches in 2024, developing a soft-edged sans and slab that inherit the eccentric, stamped-metal approach to serifs. The result is four subfamilies – the original mono, a sans, a condensed sans and a slab – sharing a common industrial DNA across ten styles each.
Classification
The original Pennsylvania family is monospaced, inspired by stamped-metal licence plate letterforms. The 2024 expansion adds a sans and slab derived from the same eccentric serif approach, but the mono origin and industrial character define the collection's identity.
