A fixed-width grotesque with roots in Japanese screen typography and early Windows system fonts, offered in three weights with italics and an extensive set of box-drawing characters.
About
Colophon's System85 Mono takes its name from the 850-unit cap height shared across the family, a proportion borrowed from the tight vertical rhythms of Japanese typography and pan-Asian Windows system fonts from the 3.1 through XP era. The design pairs grotesque letterforms with selective serif details and unconventionally compressed proportions, producing a texture that feels simultaneously familiar and slightly off. A comprehensive box-drawing toolkit and associated arrow glyphs extend the monospaced utility beyond text into diagrammatic and interface uses.
Classification
