A grotesque family of six styles rooted in the default system fonts of Windows 95–XP, filtered through the lens of Japanese Latin typography, with matching proportional and monospaced variants.
About
Conceived after a visit to Japan and research into Japanese typography, System85 reinterprets the pan-Asian variants of early Windows system fonts, with an unusually small descender, unconventional width and a mix of serif and straight forms. The family spans proportional and monospaced subfamilies across three weights with corresponding italics, while the mono variant includes an extensive set of box drawing characters and stylistically matched arrows. The Professional version extends language support to Cyrillic and Greek alongside a wider set of OpenType features.
Classification
A grotesque with mixed serif and straight forms, inspired by the default system fonts of Windows 3.1 through XP, particularly pan-Asian variants. Its unusually small descender and compressed vertical proportions place it firmly in the grotesque tradition, though with deliberate idiosyncrasies drawn from Japanese Latin typography.
